Anyone who has watched a two-year-old in a room full of toys knows the scene: they pick one up, drop it thirty seconds later, pick up another, drop it, and end up playing with the box. Intuition says something's off — more options should mean more play, not less. It turns out intuition is right, and there's an experiment that shows it.
What the evidence says
A group of researchers did something simple: they had young children play in two conditions — one with few toys available, another with many — and measured what happened. With fewer toys in view, children played longer with each object and in more varied ways: the same toy became several different things, more elaborate play sequences appeared, attention stayed put.
The explanation is not mysterious, and you probably recognize it from your own adult life: every visible option is an invitation to switch tasks. An environment full of alternatives fragments attention — in a two-year-old and in a forty-year-old facing twelve open tabs. Depth needs, above all, for nothing to be calling from the side.
And here it's worth saying what this finding does NOT say, because that's where the popularization runs wild: it doesn't say toys are bad, it doesn't say what the magic number is, and it says nothing about what they're made of. The aesthetic of minimalist shelves with three light-wood pieces is a matter of taste (and budget), not a scientific finding. What the evidence points to is how many options are available at the same time — not how many exist in the house or how much they cost.
What I'd do
Rotation, not buying or discarding. The practical application costs nothing: store most of the toys in a box out of sight, leave a few available, and rotate every one or two weeks. Two bonus benefits: the stored toys come back with novelty (same objects, rediscovered), and clutter drops on its own.
Keep variety of type available, not quantity. A couple of things to build with, something for symbolic play (dolls, animals, costumes), something for movement. The variety that matters is across kinds of play, not units.
And don't turn it into a strict system. If you didn't rotate this week, nothing happened. The version of this that works is the version that survives a chaotic week.
The limits of what we know
The experiment is small and with very young children, in a lab play session — suggestive, not definitive, and it tells us nothing about long-term effects or other ages. Nor is there evidence about "the right number" of toys: anyone giving you an exact figure is making it up. What's reasonable is what's modest: fewer simultaneous options favor deeper play, the intervention is free and reversible, and your own child is the sample that matters — try it for two weeks and see.
